We will start the evening before the trip starts with a meeting where we will check your gear, issue hire kit if needed, and chat through the days ahead. The following morning we will head up to a local mountain refuge and then spend the afternoon learning how to use our crampons and ice axes. We will also cover how to tie into the rope and take rope coils around your body.
The following morning we will head up the glacier and climb an easy local peak. We will then spend the afternoon looking at Crevasse Rescue skills, abseiling, and climbing.
The final day will be spent climbing another nearby peak - usually we will climb a rocky peak where you can practise using your new skills to safeguard each other on tricky terrain.
Possible venues:
The Albert Premier Refuge and Cabane du Trient provide lots of variety and ideal terrain for an intro to alpinism. Likely peaks climbed are the Aiguille Petite Fourche, Tete Blanche, and the Aiguille du Tour.
The Rifugio Torino is easily accessed via the Skyway lift from Courmayeur. The local terrain offers high altitude glacial tours, and some nice rocky peaks such as the Aiguille Marbree, Aiguille du Toule and the Aiguille d'Entreves.
